  • I started to experience dizziness, nausea, loud tinnitus, ear pressure, neck pain, head pain, face pain and low level fatigue over a year ago (spring 2016)
…I associated this with a bad ear infection as many of the symptoms were the same. After a couple of visits to my GP, only to be told that my ears were fine and given antibiotics, I started to do my own research. I tried acupuncture and after 4 treatments and my symptoms getting worse, the Chinese Doctor mentioned I might have TMJ. After researching this (I'd never heard of it!) I was lucky enough to read some of the testimonials on Dr Grossmann's website and decided that it looked like this was the problem. After a consultation and a scan, Dr Grossmann confirmed my jaw joint was 'stuck' and recommended 3 months of splint therapy. Anyway to cut a long story short, my symptoms rapidly went away and I got my energy and confidence back. Dr Grossmann was very reassuring and everything he described happened. TMJ is a dreadful condition and compounded by the lack of information available and ignorance by General Practitioners ( who admittedly have a tough job). If my GP was able to diagnose this it would have saved everyone a lot of time and frustration. I'm extremely grateful to Dr Grossmann and am now living without any of the symptoms.

    Kind Regards, Daniel

  • Just a note to say thank-you. The night-time appliance seems to be working really well and I have not been in any pain for the past few months…
…After 5 years of chronic tooth and jaw pain it is difficult to put into words how amazing it still feels to wake up every morning free from pain. I am finally going back to work next week – something I would not have thought possible this time last year. LD
  • I had been suffering from poor balance and a strange sensation of pins and needles in the side of my face for some time but when I found myself gripping the edge of my desk at work to maintain my equilibrium, I knew that something was seriously wrong. "Am I having a stroke?" I was scared…
…To compound my problems I also had a constantly blocked left ear and left nasal passage - something I was told was a Eustachian Tube dysfunction. I also suffered with chronic back and hip pain. I was diagnosed at St Thomas' Hospital in London with a mild case of sleep apnea. Around 2011 my jaw joints became clunky and began clicking. Repeated trips to St Thomas's ENT department failed to find a cause. Tests failed to reveal anything and I was referred for CBT to deal with my anxiety. It was hugely frustrating. Eventually one of the several ENT specialists I saw privately suggested I see a maxillofacial expert. An MRI scan at King's College Hospital revealed the two small discs in my jaw joints had moved out of position on each side meaning the temporal mandibular joint was functioning bone on bone without the cushioning effect of the discs. I discovered my mouth was only opening a third as wide as it should as a result and my jaw joints were now arthritic. Yet in the absence of any real pain - despite all my other symptoms - there were no treatment option on offer in the NHS other than to eat soft food. On the other hand a private specialist told me I may need a jaw joint replacement. The treatment options varied wildly. All along I was met with more questions than answers. But at least I was now able to research my condition online and I read about an orthodontist in London called Patrick Grossman.

The day I met Patrick in January this year (2016), everything changed. He specializes in TMJ dysfunction believing that by taking pressure off the jaw joints by fitting a plastic splint to the bottom teeth many of the awful symptoms I was experiencing would disappear. He was right. Within two weeks the headaches had gone, the strange dizzy spells - which had become exhausting to cope with - had stopped. The numbness in my face and sensitivity to light also disappeared. The device also helped the jaw muscles - which are often in spasm due to the badly aligned joint - to relax reducing the knock on effect of neck, shoulder and back pain I was having. Just as importantly, a sense of well-being which had been eroded over the years of suffering in ignorance, began to return. Patrick has dealt with many patients like me - who went round the houses seeking a diagnosis - and who finally found help through this simple yet ingenious splint therapy. The device is worn 24/7 and I got used to it quickly. At the beginning of August this year (2016) I had surgery under general anesthetic to put the discs on both sides of my jaw back in the correct position inside the joint. They are now secured with tiny titanium pins, keeping them in place and once again allowing my jaw to function properly.

Peter Ayliffe, the maxillofacial surgeon who works closely with Patrick, told me after surgery he found significant scar tissue pressing on my middle ear on the left side - which is right next to the joint - causing it to malfunction, resulting in Eustachian Tube dysfunction and the constant blockage in my nose and ear on the left side. That problem has also now disappeared leading to much sounder sleep. What caused the discs to move out of position? I have always suspected the oral device designed to help me breath through my mouth was responsible because it holds the mouth open, stretching the joint. However, I also grind my teeth, which puts pressure on the joint and the discs, and I have also taken my fair share of knocks to the head and face as a keen sportsman in my youth. I will never know what caused the problem. The next and final phase of my treatment under Patrick will be to ensure my bite pattern is correctly aligned to sync with my newly corrected joint. That will require a dental appliance much like a brace. But I am already feeling so much better. After years of worry and chronic fatigue and uncertainty my life is returning to normal.

  • "My name is Dorian, several years ago, I went for a consultation with Dr. Grossman after years of suffering from persistent daily headaches…
…and a clicking jaw which were not helped by neurological investigations and medicine as well as orthodontics and other treatments. After thorough, skillful treatment by Dr. Grossman the intensity of my head pain and related muscular pain has noticeably reduced. My cranial osteopath has also remarked on a qualitative change in the cranial tension. I have no doubt that Dr. Grossman is a leading TMJ expert and I consider myself fortunate to have been treated by him.

Before meeting Patrick Grossmann I had been suffering with disturbing ear related symptoms for several months. This started with high pitched ringing in my ears, which started one night and progressed to a feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear and finally constant dizziness that felt like I was inebriated. At this point the symptoms were severely affecting my home life with two young children and work with my attendance well down. As my symptoms progressed i made numerous trips to My G.P. who could not see anything wrong with my ears and therefore suggested it was a virus that would pass. After some months they referred me to an ENT specialist. Over the course of about 2 months I paid several visits to the ENT and had numerous tests, all of which showed my ears to be normal and therefore inconclusive. The ENT specialist then advised me we would only know more depending on how my symptoms progressed, as they could find nothing else. At the time it was suggested I might have Menieres Disease, which would be consistent with my symptoms. After much Internet research by my wife and myself and at this point driven by desperation we found TMJ as a potential cause of these symptoms and subsequently found. Dr. Patrick Grossmann who came highly recommended as a specialist in this field. Meeting Dr. Grossmann was immediately incredibly reassuring as it was clear he had treated numerous patients with similar symptoms successfully. Initially I was prescribed a night splint to wear while sleeping to relax my jaw at night. The effects were surprisingly quick; the mornings became virtually symptom free with the symptoms slowly returning over the course of the day. As this was the case Dr. Grossmann referred me for an MRI, which confirmed the nature of my TMJ disorder. Accordingly, Dr. Grossmann prescribed me with a daytime splint to be worn throughout the day. Over the course of the next few weeks my symptoms all faded away to the point that I felt completely normal. I'm incredible Grateful to Dr. Grossmann and would recommend him highly to anyone who is experiencing similar symptoms.
  • "My name is Lisa Hornshaw, I am 29 years old and I would like to share my story with you…
'Before visiting Patrick I would say I had been suffering from chronic pain in the jaw joint mainly on the left, muscles in face, head and neck along with headaches for about 5 years after some dental work that I had done, it was obvious to me that this dental work had started to trigger off a bad malocclusion as the pain just continued to get worse over these 5 years.

I was constantly uncomfortable and in pain which triggered chronic fatigue, just even simple tasks felt like mountainous work I felt my body was slowing down because it was in a constant state of stress with the pain, during this time I developed a autoimmune disorder (which I do have a deposition for as it runs in my family) but I truly believe it was triggered by the stress of the pain. I became reclusive, felt robbed of any confidence and unfortunately slipped into depression. I used to be so active and was noticing that my performance in the gym was pathetic I couldn't lift weights, I tired so easily.
I had started before I saw Patrick to do some research on what was going on as I had no idea, and all my symptoms seemed to point towards TMJ, through this research on TMJ I came across Patrick and his work and decided to take the trip from Yorkshire to London to see if he could help. My first appointment Patrick explained to me the workings of the jaw joint in much detail and how it is supposed to function correctly, he ordered an MRI scan on both joints which revealed that I did have bilaterally displaced discs more prevalent on the left side which obviously made total sense, Patrick then explained to me the course of treatment to correct the issues.

So I started my treatment with my Gelb splint in the August of 2015 and continued to wear this splint for the next year, now we are in September 2016 and I can honestly say.. I HAVE MY LIFE BACK I am no longer in chronic pain. I am currently 36 weeks pregnant as I write this, I can honestly say I really thought that becoming pregnant was out of the question completely for me as I felt I just would not have been able to cope with a pregnancy both physically and mentally whilst in the chronic pain I was in. I feel like a different person and even people comment on the way I look as my face was always very swollen before the treatment and how I am in myself I have my confidence and self esteem back I'm not miserable anymore I feel relaxed and happy and I beyond grateful for Patricks work, right now I am waiting on my the birth of the beautiful baby I thought I would never be able to have to be born and then we are moving onto phase 2 of treatment.

I feel so incredibly lucky to have had my treatment with Patrick, and my appointments have and continue to be a pleasure (not something most would say about a trip to the dentist).
  • "My name is Lindsay Weinstein, I have been a chronic migraine sufferer for seven years and prior to being a patient of Patrick Grossman…
'I have been a chronic migraine sufferer for 7 years and prior to being a patient of Patrick Grossman, I had constant facial pain, daily cluster migraines, at least weekly aura migraines and had spent thousands on migraine treatment which at best slightly reduced my symptoms. Such was my condition that I had poor quality of life and felt like I just existed. I was diagnosed by Patrick Grossman with TMJ in February 2015 and have since worn a day and night splint. My symptoms have radically reduced to the extent that I have at times had 15 weeks without a migraine and often have 8-9 weeks between them. I am thankfully no longer in constant chronic pain all of which has helped me to get my confidence and life back to the extent that I have been able to move and change jobs.

I cannot recommend Patrick Grossman enough, he is calm, thorough, supportive and genuinely understands how terrible you feel whilst giving you realistic hope that your symptoms will reduce in time, once treated.

  • “My name is Davide and I work in the NHS as a consultant doctor.I'd like to share my story with you…
‘For the last 3 years, I have suffered from tension type headaches as well as severe facial and back pain. These symptoms led to a state of chronic fatigue which affected every aspect of my professional and personal life. Whereas I had run three marathons I was now unable to walk even a mile!! Most of my free time was spent in bed unable to cope with my daily duties. In common with people who have chronic pain, I saw many specialists and was given numerous diagnoses including chronic tension headaches, new daily persistent  headaches, post-viral and chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and finally told I had a psychosomatic disorder. At one point I was told "Davide, you need a change of life!" so I left my job for a part time one and indeed my life changed but the symptoms did not!! As a last resort I decided to consult Dr Grossmann. I was no longer interested in what the problem was but  just desperate for help. When we met, it was the first time somebody had tried to give me a scientific explanation for my symptoms and this was a surprise. His theory made sense to me and I decided to follow his advice. Dr Grossmann requested MRI scans of the temporo-mandibular joints (TMJ's) which revealed bilateral dislocation of the articular discs. I was fitted with a 24/7 lower dental splint and believe it or not after 6 days I was running again… it was just a taste of freedom. My improvement continues day by day and I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you Dr Grossmann.

  • “I will always be grateful to Dr Grossmann for identifying the cause of my debilitating headaches, jaw pain and fatigue…
After some frustrating years of misdiagnosis at my local hospital, it was an indescribable relief to put my treatment in the hands of someone who understood my problem and knew how to fix it. It is not an overstatement to say that without the knowledge and skill of Dr Grossmann and also the care and encouragement of him and his team, I would not be living the fulfilling life that I now enjoy.
