What
is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis
is a deep relaxation technique allowing your mind to take a rest. The
calming of your mind allows you to process information at a deeper level
referred to as the unconscious. This allows you to view things as they
really are and not purely on how you have learned to react to them.
This
re-evaluation at a deep level allows a change in approach at the surface
level. At no time does your mind ever “sleep”, switch off, nor is it
possible for you to lose control or power. It is not possible to make you
do anything you do not wish under hypnosis. The trance state experienced
is identical to that experienced while driving a long journey, daydreaming
or in the twilight before we fall asleep. The process of relaxation is
similar to that given after aerobic and yoga classes. Patients often
report feeling much more relaxed in many aspects of their lives after
hypnosis.
How
does it work?
The
activity of some of the chemicals in the nervous system can be affected by
stress. This can lead to an increase in the perception of pain.
Hypnosis dilutes stress by taking our focus elsewhere. In our
normal every day lives we “trance” out many times. We do this
naturally without any conscious thought and it is often referred to as
“day dreaming” or being in a “world of our own”. This
natural ability for self hypnosis combats
stress. This automatic trancing in and out allows our stress levels
to remain acceptably low and leaves us in a favourable position to
tolerate some pain or discomfort should it arise.
Individuals
who suffer prolonged pain find occasions
when they lose themselves in their unconscious thoughts become shorter and
less frequent. In effect our natural “stress buster” doesn't work and
our pain tolerance goes down. This is further complicated by deprivation
of other stress relief patterns such as uninterrupted sleep.
Hypnosis
allows you to visit this “world of your own” guided at first and
subsequently alone where you can zap the stress, clear the system and
increase your pain tolerance. Those who suffer prolonged pain
inevitably encounter more stress dealing with
life and have a greater need
to master
this technique.
Hypnosis
can also be used to re-evaluate other aspects of your life to eliminate as
much stress from the nervous system as possible.
Hypnosis
enables you to accelerate healing and boost the immune systems of the body
by increasing the activity of chemicals which make us feel good. This is
of course the first step on the way to getting better. You can become an
active participant in your treatment and not a helpless victim as patients
often describe.
Hypnosis
allows the mind and body to work together for your common good lifting
your spirit allowing for holistic
healing. Hypnosis is perfectly natural and a primary part of us like a
muscle. We can choose to exercise it or not.
Why
isn't hypnosis more commonly used or available?
Hypnosis
requires nothing more than human words or thoughts. It does not entail the
use of drugs. Once learned it costs nothing and is readily available in
copious amounts to help and heal. It is not therefore heavily marketed or
advertised. Hypnosis is becoming more and more mainstream as a therapeutic
tool and now works along side modern medicine with all its fantastic
advances.
How
long does it take?
Each
session lasts one hour. The first session is a consultation
with
Dr Hendron to assess your individual situation and to advise on the
possible applications of hypnosis in your case. There are usually between
one and six further sessions. Three sessions is average. During these
sessions you will also be taught self hypnosis. These sessions will be
designed to assist and enhance the treatment you receive from Patrick Grossmann.

About
Dr Hendron.
"Graduating
in 1992 from Trinity College Dublin I soon became principle of a general
practice in Ireland
practicing
for 8 years. During this time I became increasingly interested in the
“nervous” patient. For the majority of these patients a degree of
compromise could be reached allowing treatment to be carried out. However
a category of patient existed who, with all the will in the world, could
not be coaxed into feeling comfortable and in control in the dental chair.
I then discovered the power of hypnosis.
I
began by taking a basic course in hypnosis with the British Society of
Medical and Dental Hypnosis (BSMDH). Applying these techniques in practice
convinced me of the value of hypnosis in helping
patients. I then began to expand my interest in the subject. I
moved to London in 2001 to advance this career path.
I
have since completed a year long diploma in cognitive hypnotherapy, gained
my practitioner qualification in neuro linguistic programming, an
additional hypnotherapy practitioners diploma and further studied with
BSMDH.
My
interest has clearly drawn me toward treating the emotional aspect of the
patient’s problem. I work on all applications of hypnosis in therapy. My
in depth knowledge of dental procedures and problems affords me a
rewarding success rate in this area.
I
believe that hypnosis has been a forgotten gift for many of us. I Hope
that through its more recent revival it will be rediscovered as a basic
skill enriching our lives. Since it is
our mind which creates our limitation, changing our mind changes our
limitations."
